“One Barangay, One Product” Project

The city government of Marikina, through the Marikina Livelihood Training Center (MLTC) and City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) recently launched the “One Barangay, One Product” project. Themed “Sapat na kita, masaganang buhay”, the project aims to spur livelihood opportunities by enabling residents to engage in economic activities that will help augment their income. The project taps the local entrepreneurs to engage in producing one specific product per barangay. A pilot area is barangay Nangka which will be producing ‘eco bags’ for various medium and large-scale shoe industries. These ‘eco bags’ will be used as replacement for shoe boxes that have been traditionally used by shoe manufacturers in marketing their shoes. De Guzman lauded the project as it does not only promote livelihood among the Marikeños but also foster environmental preservation through recycling with the use of these bags. “Aside from being an ordinary storage bag for shoes, these eco bags can also be used as replacement for plastic shopping bags. With this, we can further encourage our constituents to practice the habit of recycling,” De Guzman said. According to MLTC, the first batch of eco bags will be released in October. Presently, 50 entrepreneurs have already signed up for the project in Bgy. Nangka. The project will be implemented in the city’s 16 barangays where other livelihood products will be produced.
