The city government of Marikina headed by Mayor Del De Guzman lauded Lions Club International District 356-A Daegu, Taekuk for its offer to build toilet and kitchen facilities for disaster relief operations in the city. Chosen as pilot areas were Nangka Elementary School and H. Bautista Elementary School. Both are primary evacuation centers for riverside community residents in Brgy. Nangka and Brgy. Tumana. De Guzman personally expressed his gratitude to Club International District 356-A Daegu, Taekuk President Hae Soo Seo during his group’s courtesy call recently. “Proper hygiene and sanitation is important, not only for the convenience of evacuees, but also to avoid any outbreak of disease during calamities. This will greatly benefit our riverside communities,” De Guzman said. According to Hae Soo Seo, the construction of the said facilities will start on September 15 and is expected to be inaugurated on November 23. The kitchen is measured at 13 sq. meters and will include utensils; while, the toilet is two sq. meters each with three cubicles for women and one for men. Estimated cost of the project is around PhP700,000. “We are happy to help Marikina as we saw the suffering the city experienced during the inundation of typhoon ‘Ondoy’. We also experience the same plight in Korea that’s why we know how it feels to be flood victims,” Hae Soo Seo said. The visiting delegates said that they are willing to replicate this in other evacuation centers of the city if the result of the project is positive. To date, Lions Club International District 356-A Daegu, Taekuk has visited and inspected Nangka Elementary School and H. Bautista Elementary School in preparation for the construction of the kitchen and toilet facilities.
