Marikina celebrates Earth Day

The City of Marikina celebrated “Earth Day 2011” on April 25. As part of the celebration, the city government through the City Environmental Management Office (CEMO) conducted several activities that foster love for the environment. Among the activities conducted for the occasion are Balik Bisikleta, Recyclables Collection Event, Earth Fair and Exhibit, Earth Day March, river clean-up contest, Piknikan sa Earth Day, and a short program. The celebration kicked off at 6:30 a.m. with Balik Bisikleta event at Parang Playground where some 500 cyclists consisting of government officials and employees, cycling groups and other organizations participated. This cycling event commenced at the Freedom Park where the weekly flag-raising ceremony and Earth Day program was held. Earth Day program was graced by Elisea ‘Bebet’ Gozun, a Marikeña and former secretary of Department of Environment and Natural Resources, as well as Rep. Miro Quimbo (2nd District), and the local city officials headed by Mayor Del De Guzman. Other activity held at the Freedom Park was the Recyclable Collection event, which was participated in by top local business establishments, local schools, and non-government organizations. Likewise, an Earth Day March commencing from the Freedom Park to Marikina River Park was held. The march featured environmental messages written in placards made of recycled materials. Clean-up drive of the Marikina River was also held on the occasion where non-government organizations and city government employees joined in. To end the fruitful celebration, all participants held “Piknikan Para sa Earth Day” or a potluck lunch at Sto. Nino picnic area in Marikina River Park. These activities were facilitated by the city government of Marikina in partnership with Department of Science and Technology, Manila Water Company, and other environmental organizations, government program and commercial enterprises, private companies, and non-government organizations.
