There is a new place on Lilac St., the epicenter of the explosive food scene in Marikina City, that lets you enjoy your favorite drink – steaming crème brulee latte or iced caramel machiato  -- while being pampered.

House of Z Nail Lounge has a coffee shop next door that gives its customers the choice of having coffee or tea while waiting for their turn for a manicure or pedicure or both, or have the drink while their nails are being groomed by one of the therapists. Either way, it sure is a pleasurable experience that will leave you all the more relaxed.

“Originally, spa lang talaga dapat siya,” says the charming Tata Zarsuela, the young manager of the salon and coffee shop owned by her parents. “Ang dad ko talaga ang mahilig sa pampering services. So he experienced iyong maghintay for his turn. So naisip niya, dapat may coffee shop na tambayan habang naghihintay.”

“Doon pumasok ang concept na dapat may coffee shop sa House of Z. At so far, nag-work naman siya kasi pag nag-wait ang ibang customers, diretso na sila dito sa coffee shop. Kape-kape muna. Or habang sinasalang sila, they can get tea or coffee,” says the 23-year-old Communications Arts graduate.

A Family Business

The place got its name from the first letter of the family’s last name.

“It’s called Hosue of Z kasi surname ng family. It’s a family business. Dad ko ang may idea at concept nito, pina-manage lang niya sa akin,” says Tata, who admits at being overwhelmed at first on how to go about managing a business since she did not finish a business degree in college.

After finishing Communication Arts at the University of Sto. Tomas, she worked in digital advertising and after two years, she left because she was set to manage the House of Z. But while the nail salon and coffee shop were being built and fixed, she decided to join an all-girls hip-hop dancing group named Stiletto Crew.

“Noong una unsure ako if I can handle the business. Wala kasi akong prior experience. With the help of my father and my family, nakaya ko rin. Sila ang nagturo sa akin how to handle the business. Lalo na ang dad ko. Sa kaniya galing lahat ng guidance,” says Tata, who has left the dance group to focus the House of Z.

The House of Z is not the first business venture of her dad, who works as a general manager of a construction company. His other businesses include a store selling car accessories, now being managed by Tata’s older brother, who is the first born of the three children, a laundry shop, a Korean restaurant and a car wash.

Tata is the second child and the youngest is still in school. Her mom is a dentist who has her own clinic.

While she is still a neophyte in the business arena, Tata, who has the poise and the self-confidence of a pro at a young age probably earned from her dancing gigs, has proven her mettle in business. Since House of Z opened on February 14 this year, Valentine’s Day, she says business is picking up.

“Nagugulat kami sa progress niya. Nakakatuwa. Noong una puro family and friends lang ang customers namin. Eventually, dumadami ang tao. Lalo na kapag weekends, puno kami,” she says. “Dati mga nail specialists namin sasabihin: Mam wala pa rin tayong customers. Ngayon naman: Mam hindi na kami napapahinga sa dami ng customers.”

“Nakakatuwa din kasi ilang months pa lang kaming bukas, may mga regular clients na. Ang iba sa kanila, ni-refer ng friends or family nila who have tried our services,” she adds.

Service at Its Finest

The nail lounge has eight therapists and the place can accommodate eight customers at a time.

Asked what drives people to keep on coming back, she says the quality of the service and the competitive pricing. Basic manicure is P50, basic pedicure is P50 as well; hand spa is P100, foot spa is P110; hand massage is P140 and foot massage is P160; hand paraffin wax is P200, while foot paraffin wax is P250.

The salon also offers ORLY Gel manicure at P300 and pedicure at P300 as well; TRUGEL manicure is also at P300 and pedicure at P300 too. It also has packages that range from P270 to P1,000 for a full service inclusive of GeL manicure and pedicure,  hand and foot massage and foot spa.

“Very affordable siya,” says the advertising executive in Tata. “Sa mga malls, ang manicure is P250. Same price sa pedicure.”

The coffee shop too is gaining its own customers, those who are not waiting for their turn at the nail lounge.

“May mga regular na rin dito. Mga taga-Marikina rin. Ang iba taga-Lower Antipolo. May mga estudyante at young professionals,” she says.

Bestsellers include milkshakes, particularly Oreo and Milo milkshakes, iced caramel macchiato, hot mocha and hot macchiato.

The coffee shop also serves food such as lasagna, grilled cheese sandwich, tuna melt sandwich and nachos, as well as cakes and pastries like tablea cake, Oreo cheesecake, brazo de mercedes cupcake and a lot more.

The coffee shop has a nice garden at the back for those who want to smoke or simply stare at the blue skies while waiting for their turn at the nail lounge, or while reading a book because Tata and her mom, who both love to read, have brought some of their books so that customers would have something to read while savoring their favorite hot or cold drinks and satisfying their sweet cravings.
