No less than 1,200 cyclists from all over the country will flock to Marikina city this Saturday, September 22, for the inaugural race of the latest major cycling event, "Larga Pilipinas".
It will be held in West Drive, Brgy. Marikina Heights from 6:00 in the morning until 12:00 noon. There are multiple categories available, from Corporate Executive, Managers, Under-21 (Youth), Masters (ex-pro), Amateurs, Amateurs (45-up), Triathletes/Duathletes, Women’s, and finally, the main event, Pro-Elite.
The pro-elite race will include the most skilled cyclists in the Philippines, such as Ronda Pilipinas two-time champion and Marikina pride Jan Paul Morales, former champion John Mark Galedo, and reigning Ronda king Ronald Oranza.
To make the event more exciting and to accommodate more participants, Larga Pilinas also opened its doors to hobbyists or ordinary cyclists in folding bike, fixed gear, and mountain bike races.
It is the goal of Larga Pilipinas to raise funds for the programs and projects of the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission, as well as to showcase Marikina as the “Show Capital of Cycling,” which is why the city was chosen as the venue for the event.
Mayor Marcy’s Full Support
Mayor Marcy Teodoro fully supports the races. He said the city continues to encourage its citizens to burn fat rather than fuel by using their bicycles.
“Talagang aggressive po kami to encourage everyone to ride their bikes. Papunta sa palengke o sa opisina, mas hinihimok namin na magbike sila,” Mayor Marcy said.
(We are really aggressive in encouraging everyone to ride their bikes. Whether they are going to the market or the office, we would rather they use their bikes.)
“Kaya nga pag may mga outstanding employees kami ang premyo namin bikes,” Mayor March added.
(That’s why when we have outstanding employees, we reward them with bikes.)
Meanwhile, Larga Pilipinas media bureau chief Snow Badua was impressed by the passionate love and support of Marikina citizens with cycling as a sport.
“Nagugulat talaga ako kasi ang tindi ng Marikina, isa sila sa pinakamaraming cycling fans. Talagang dinudumog ang mga event dito,” Badua said, in gratitude for the supporters of Larga Pilipinas such as Big Chill, PCSO Scratch It, Go For Gold, Excellent Noodles, Franzia Wine, Maynilad, LBC, Quad X, 3Q Sports Events and Management, Versa.ph, Green Planet, Black Mamba, Manila Water, Zen Skin Institute, Bike Xtreme, MMDA, Triathlon Association of the Philippines, and PhilCycling.
(I’m really surprised at the enthusiasm of Marikina, it has one of the most number of cycling fans. People really flock to these events.)
“Saka nakakahanga na halos bawat bahay dito sa Marikina may mga naka-park na bisikleta sa harapan nila,” added the Larga Pilipinas concept head.
(It’s also amazing that nearly every house here in Marikina has a bike parked out front.)
Due to this event, it is expected that some roads may be temporarily closed this Saturday, as they will be used as routes by the cyclists.
