Marikina City has been chosen by the Department of Education (DepEd) to host this year’s Palarong Pambansa.
DepEd officials have confirmed recently that the annual sports meet for elementary and high school students will be held in the Shoe Capital of the Philippines after the withdrawal of the original host Occidental Mindoro following the damages it faced brought by Typhoon Tisoy.
The withdrawal of Occidental Mindoro was recommended by the province’s risk management office after a large area of the province was heavily affected by Typhoon Tisoy last December.
The Palarong Pambansa is considered as the “flagship sports program” of the DepEd. In this annual event, thousands of student-athletes and coaches from both public and private schools across the Philippines come together to compete in various sporting events and represent their region nationwide.
In 2013, the Republic Act No. 10588 or the Palarong “Pambansa Act” was signed into law which institutionalized the national competition and assigned the annual event as the “primary venue for providing in-school sports opportunities to improve the physical, intellectual and social well-being of the youth.”
Meanwhile, in a memorandum given to Marikina Schools Division, DepEd Undersecretary Atty. Revsee Escobedo, who is also the Palarong Pambansa secretary-general, sent a team last December 27 to inspect the sports facilities in the city.
In his letter, Atty. Escobedo also tasked the Division of Marikina City to submit the list of possible billeting areas for the delegates.
Yesterday, January 8, Mayor Marcy Teodoro met with school principals, supervisors, and other officials to discuss the City’s preparation for Palarong Pambansa.
This is the first time Marikina City will be hosting Palarong Pambansa while it is the fifth time that the sporting event will be held in Metro Manila since 1966.
