Christmas is in the air in Marikina City as it welcomes the festive season with the unveiling on Monday, November 12, of the Sapatos Festival at the Freedom Park.
The Sapatos Festival will commence with the opening of the shoe bazaar at the Freedom Park where 48 manufacturers of shoes, bags, belts and other leather goods in Marikina will showcase their products that are value for money because of their durability, high quality and affordability.
Mayor Marcy Teodoro will lead the opening ceremonies of the festival and the shoe bazaar on Monday, where Marikina-made leather goods will be sold at various booths set up inside a huge tent at the Freedom Park. The booths will be open daily from 9:00 in the morning.
Marikina is known as the Shoe Capital of the Philippines because it was here where the first pair of shoes was made in 1887 that paved the way for the establishment of a vibrant shoe industry known for its high-quality craftsmanship, durability and comfort.
The shoe industry has contributed much to the economy, culture and heritage of Marikina that is why it is celebrated every year.
Cognizant of the important role played by the shoe industry in Marikina's economic, cultural and social development, Mayor Marcy has lined up a number of measures to bolster Marikina's footwear and leather goods including organizing several bazaars and caravans that will help expand the market for these products.
The Sapatos Festival is just one of the major festivals and events that will be celebrated this month and in December. On December 9, Marikina will mark the Rehiyon, Rehiyon Festival that honors the Marikenos who settled in the city from other places of the country and made Marikina their home.
