Mayor Marcy Teodoro and Gina Lopez, chairman of the ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, Inc. (ALKFI), led the “Bayanihan Para Sa Kalikasan” program held over the weekend to rehabilitate and beautify Palay Creek in Brgy. Tumana.

As part of the program, Mayor Marcy, Ms. Lopez, students, homeowners in the area, City Hall employees and other volunteers planted roses and other garden plants and cleaned up the area to make the Palay Creek and its surroundings pleasing to the eyes and relaxing to the residents and even to those who are just passing by.

The clean up drive is part of the Local Government of Marikina’s efforts to rehabilitate the creek and its environment.

It would be recalled that the Local Government of Marikina, ALKFI, Sun Life Financial, Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) and the Arco Group teamed up to build a linear park near the Palay Creek. The project, which had a groundbreaking ceremony in March 2018, would be inaugurated next month upon its completion.

Among those who joined the Bayanihan Para Sa  Kalikasan on Saturday were students from the nearby Concepcion Integrated School, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina, volunteers from Sunlife Financial, PRRC and Bantay Kalikasan, and members of the Philippine National Police in Marikina.

“Bokashi” balls or bio-balls were also thrown into Palay Creek to improve the quality of the water.  The Bokashi balls, developed in Japan, are used in breaking down toxins and food wastes in waters with the aid of beneficial microorganisms.
