Mayor Marcy Teodoro yesterday led a team from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) of Marikina and other local officials in bringing cheers and joy to Marikina’s centenarians.
Mayor Marcy, the DSWD and OSCA gave P100,000 in cash as gifts to eight Marikina residents who are 100 years old and more. Of the eight, only six made it to the event at the Kapitan Moy, where they received the cash gifts with their family and relatives. The two others were visited in their homes by DSWD and OSCA personnel, who brought with them the P100,000 cash gifts from the national government.
Under Republic Act 10868 also known as the Centenarian Act of 2016, Filipinos who reached the age of 100 years and above would be given incentives including a one-time Centenarian Gift of P100,000, courtesy of the national government, a Letter of Felicitation signed by the President (President Rodrigo Duterte), and for those who died upon the effectivity of this law, a Posthumous Plaque of Recognition.
In a short speech, Mayor Marcy stressed how the national and local government both give importance to the role of family in society and in honoring its elders or senior citizens, who have been instrumental in bringing up and molding their children and grandchildren into successful and patriotic citizens of the country.
“Kahit dito sa binibigay ni Presidente Duterte sa atin, pamilya ang mahalaga. Kaya kayo nabigyan ng ganitong klaseng halaga sa lipunan dahil mahalaga kayo sa pamilya,” Mayor Marcy said, honoring the eight centenarians.
The Local Government Units such as the Marikina City Government are tasked to identify who are the centenarians in their respective localities. Even Filipino centenarians living abroad can also avail of the incentives upon verification with the Commission on Filipino Overseas.
The law took effect on June 15, 2016, and is now being implemented in various parts of the country, to the delight of the centenarians and their families.
Mayor Marcy has been championing and honoring the senior citizens of Marikina. During their birthdays, the senior citizens receive P1,000 cash gifts from OSCA and a basket of groceries. The Mayor also promised that the senior citizens can swim for free at the swimming pool that’s being built at the Marikina Hotel, where a gazebo for OSCA is also being constructed as future venue for their events and activities.
