The city government of Marikina headed by Mayor Marcy Teodoro together with Vice Mayor Marion Andres, members and supporters of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) community turned the light on at the Cityhood Park of Marikina yesterday in celebration of the Pride Month.

“Nagpapasalamat tayo sa LGBTQ+ community dahil binibigyan nila ng kulay ang ating lungsod. Naipapakita natin na at the end of the day, we are all equally created,” said Mayor Marcy as he proudly supports the LGBTQ+ as a straight ally.

The 12-meter symbolic monument that stands firm at the Cityhood Park lit up to illuminate the rainbow colors that represent the LGBTQ+ minority group and their contribution to the society.

The Cityhood Park monument signifies the aspirations of Marikina City and the struggles and triumphs of the city’s forebearers.

“Isang malaking karangalan na dito natin ilulunsad ang ceremonial lighting of LGBTQ+ colors. At the same time, gusto natin palakasin ang ating institusyon na may malaking pagsuporta sa pagkapantay-pantay ng bawat isa,” said Mayor Marcy.

The Local Government of Marikina ensures that there is a safe and equal space for all gender orientation and preferences. Mayor Marcy believes that the LGBTQ+ community should have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else, free from gender-related discrimination and violence.

The Pride Month that is being celebrated every June has a localized theme this year called #ResistTogether which seeks to amplify Pride as a protest, community, and solidarity in action. Standing together in all colors and united with a common goal to fight injustice and oppression.

The Metro Manila Pride March will be held on June 29, 2019 at the Marikina Sports Center from 12:00 PM onwards to bring together the LGBTQ+ community to march for equality.
