The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Sec. Eduardo Año complimented the local government of Marikina for being a city that is already free of obstruction.
“Sa Marikina, Mayor Marcy, wala na tayong problema. Tuwing nadadaan ako diyan laging malinis. Walang obstruction or basura,” said Año during a closed-door meeting on Monday, July 29.
In line with the 60-day deadline set by President Rodrigo Duterte during his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) pertaining on the reclamation and clearing of road obstructions to ease the traffic congestion in Metro Manila.
Metro Manila mayors are given 60 days to perform clearing operations in their respective cities to ensure that streets are clean and safe for the public.
Although Marikina has been a walkable city and free from road obstruction for nearly three decades and has strictly implemented ordinances across the city, mayor Marcy Teodoro knows that it is no easy feat in terms of maintaining and making sure of the cleanliness of the sidewalks and roads in the city.
“Us, in Marikina, we have been educating our people way back when I was still a councilor. It was not an easy task but it is doable. We make our residents understand that the roads and sidewalks should always be free from obstructions as it will equate to order and smooth flow of vehicles in the city,” said Mayor Marcy.
Backed with strong political will, Mayor Marcy believes that 60 days are enough for other mayors and other local officials to clear their cities of obstructions.
Local officials in Marikina stands firm in providing Marikeños a reliable government through tireless effort to keep the city clean, safe and walkable for the public.
